Areas of Interest

I am part of the Policy and Advice Team at UKOLN, which I joined in 1987. My work currently focuses on resource description at both item and collection level. I am involved in the development of the MARC format and the revision of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules. Over the years, bibliographic management activities have included investigations into the currency, accuracy, consistency and functionality of bibliographic records, performance measurement of bibliographic record databases, retrospective cataloguing and conversion (Full Disclosure ), bibliographic records for materials in formats other than monographs in standard print (Revealweb), and the continuity of data in the bibliographic continuum. More recently I have been part of the Collection Description Focus, which provides a source of information, advice and support on all aspects of collection level description and the development of appropriate metadata standards.

A Few Facts

Was part of the first cohort of students on the Librarianship course at Robert Gordon's Institute of Technology. Qualified as ALA in 1971 and was awarded FLA by thesis in 1981. Awarded MA in Library and Information Studies, University of Central England, Birmingham in 1996.

Member of the Library Association and its Cataloguing and Indexing Group (CIG). Recipient of the 2000 Alan Jeffreys Award by CIG in recognition of a 'significant contribution to the understanding and development of statistical evidence' in the Group's field of interest. The award was established in memory of the former Chairman of the Group who died in 1994.

After qualifying worked for the University of Bath Library, firstly in charge of circulation control and then as a cataloguer. While my 2 children were young, I did part-time contract work for the University of Bath Library (UBL). This included cataloguing the Pitman Shorthand Collection, and revising and updating the catalogue of the Bath and West Collection (both collections are housed at the University of Bath Library). I joined UKOLN in 1987.

In my spare time I enjoy gardening, watercolour painting and playing the flute and have written a history of my local parish church. Served as a Foundation Governor of a local primary school in Wiltshire from 1989 to 1999 - the last 2 as Chair of Governors.
